LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-UPND National Youth Chairman Gilbert Liswaniso has strongly condemned those celebrating the recent unruly behaviour in Chingola, describing their actions as immoral and politically motivated.

Liswaniso said the lack of morals was clearly evident when some individuals rejoiced over chaos and violence simply to gain political advantage, despite President Hakainde Hichilema’s genuine efforts to assist victims of the Chiwempala Market fire.

He questioned the conscience of those mocking the President’s humanitarian gesture, asking who would have compensated the widows and families that lost their livelihoods if the Head of State had not intervened.

“Who will compensate the widow who lost her capital, which she relied on to support her family, if the President had not boldly allocated ten million kwacha?” Liswaniso asked.

He commended President Hichilema for showing decisive leadership and compassion by allocating K10 million to assist genuine victims affected by the devastating fire.

According to Liswaniso, the President’s action demonstrates a deep commitment to uplifting vulnerable citizens and reflects a government that listens and responds to the needs of its people.

He expressed disappointment with individuals who advocate for indiscipline and lawlessness while claiming to have the country’s best interests at heart.

“I strongly believe in discipline,” Liswaniso said. “It is disheartening to see people promoting disorder while pretending to be leaders capable of governing the country.”

He stressed that Zambia’s focus should remain on improving the livelihoods of its citizens and fostering national unity, not on sowing division and violence for short-term political gains.

Liswaniso emphasized that national dialogue and mutual respect are essential for progress, urging all Zambians to engage constructively whenever issues arise.

“Our focus should be on improving the livelihoods of our citizens. If there are issues, let’s engage respectfully and find the best solutions, rather than destroying the country to benefit unruly groups,” he said.

He also thanked President Hichilema for his leadership and generosity, saying the K10 million donation had sparked meaningful national debate and served as a reminder of the President’s love for the Zambian people.

Liswaniso said the gesture not only provided relief to affected traders but also reaffirmed the President’s commitment to a compassionate and people-centred government.

He further noted that the President was fully aware of the challenges at Senseli Mine and assured citizens that decisive steps were being taken to protect the welfare and future of all those affected.

“The President is aware of the situation at Senseli Mine, and decisions are being made to protect our people while ensuring that operations safeguard the future of everyone affected,” Liswaniso explained.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Peter Mutharika Government has launched the 2025/26 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Plan aimed at cushioning vulnerable households against food shortages during the coming lean period.

Presenting the report in Parliament, Minister of Agriculture Roza Mbilizi said the Response Plan stands at MK209.4 billion (approximately US$ 119.05 million).

According to Mbilizi the plan prioritizes interventions across five key clusters Coordination, Food Security, Nutrition, Protection, and Transport & Logistics to ensure a comprehensive and well-coordinated national response.

She said to date, a total of MK61.19 billion (USD 34.95 million) has been mobilized from government and development partners.

In addition, the World Bank has committed USD 45 million (about MK78 billion) to support maize purchases from Zambia.

This brings the total mobilized resources to MK168.82 billion (USD 96.42 million).

Mbilizi revealed that
despite these efforts, a funding gap of MK122 billion (USD 70.24 million) remains. Of the total requirement, the Food Security Cluster alone needs MK84.64 billion (USD 48.64 million) to effectively respond to rising food insecurity challenges.

“The Government remains committed to ensuring that no Malawian goes hungry,”

“noting that continued support from partners and the private sector will be vital to close the remaining funding gap and deliver timely assistance to those most in need,”said Mbilizi.

The plan was developed through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in collaboration with humanitarian partners, including the World Bank, the United Kingdom, USAID, Irish Aid, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Korea, China, WFP, and other development partners.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Second Vice President, Enoch Chihana says Peter Mutharika’s government is implementing several measures aimed at stabilizing Malawi’s struggling economy, with a focus on addressing persistent shortages of foreign exchange, fuel, and essential imports such as medicines and fertilizer.

Speaking during a development rally at Bolero in Rumphi on Sunday, Chihana said government remains committed to restoring confidence in the economy and ensuring that key commodities are made available across the country.

“We have brought a message of hope. As outlined by President Arthur Peter Mutharika during his recent address to Parliament, the government has set a clear policy direction to address the economic challenges the nation is facing,” he said.

Chihana acknowledged that while the problems cannot be solved overnight, the administration is prioritizing interventions in four critical areas namely foreign exchange, fertilizer, food, and fuel to stabilize the economy and cushion citizens from hardship.

He also revealed that government has already started purchasing maize to ensure that vulnerable families have access to food as the hunger situation worsens in several districts.

Chihana reiterated that government’s immediate goal is to restore economic stability and create an environment that attracts investment and supports long-term growth.

On his, Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe of Rumphi expressed optimism that the new administration will give special attention to the Rumphi–Nyika–Chitipa Road, describing it as a crucial infrastructure project for promoting trade, tourism, and regional connectivity.

“We are hopeful that this government will make the Rumphi–Nyika–Chitipa Road a priority, as it will open up our region to economic opportunities and development,” he said.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Supporters of Mighty Wanderers are still reeling from Sunday’s FDH Bank Cup final heartbreak, saying the team’s defeat was worsened by questionable decisions made during the decisive penalty shootout at Bingu National Stadium.

Many fans say they cannot understand why some of the club’s most reliable penalty takers chose not to step up when the moment demanded leadership. To them, the manner in which Wanderers lost to Silver Strikers was avoidable.

One supporter, who chose not to be identified, claimed the team’s vice captain refused to take a penalty without giving any proper explanation. He said this left fans wondering if internal issues or pressure influenced the player’s refusal.

He argued that seasoned players like Felix Zulu and Dan Kudonto should have been part of the penalty list, given their experience and composure. Instead, they watched from the sidelines while less experienced players handled the pressure.

The supporter added that Wanderers fans were left stunned after noticing that most of the penalty takers were defenders, something rarely seen in such high stakes cup finals. Unfortunately for Wanderers, some of these defenders failed to convert.

Sports analyst Haroon Cassim backed the concerns raised by the supporters. He described the situation as highly unprofessional, saying no player should refuse to take responsibility in a moment that can define a team’s season.

Cassim emphasized that a penalty shootout requires mental strength as much as skill and the lack of bravery from certain players contributed to Wanderers’ downfall. He said the players who took the penalties showed limited confidence.

Another respected sports analyst, Ibrahim Phiri, said it was shocking to see Wanderers lining up mostly defenders to take the spot-kicks. While Silver Strikers also had defenders among their takers, the difference was that they converted under pressure.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-First Capital Bank (FCB) plc has donated MK210 million to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in support of the national food relief initiative aimed at addressing acute food insecurity in Malawi.

The contribution will support the Malawi Food Relief Drive launched by President Arthur Peter Mutharika, which aims to ensure no family goes hungry during the crisis.

Speaking during the cheque presentation ceremony held at Capital Hill in Lilongwe on Monday, FCB plc Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Agness Jazza, said the initiative aligns with the bank’s core values and its dedication to improving the welfare of Malawians facing hunger.

“It is encouraging to see the government and the private sector join hands in this food relief intervention aimed at addressing acute food insecurity.

“Our commitment to this noble cause reflects the values that define FCB plc and our belief in making a meaningful impact in the communities we serve,” said Jazza.

Jazza noted that the country is facing a severe hunger crisis affecting millions of people and commended the government for its leadership and swift response in reaching out to those most affected.

Jazza said the Bank will also work alongside DoDMA in the distribution of food items as part of its corporate citizenship responsibility and commitment to complementing government efforts in ensuring that all families under threat of hunger are reached.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the government, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Joseph Mwanamveka hailed FCB plc for what he described as a timely and generous contribution, noting that the support will go a long way in assisting families struggling to access food.

“Thanks to the Bank for the assistance they have given us today. I know they could have used the resources for other purposes, but they chose to support the government and help those who are suffering and do not have enough food,” said Mwanamveka.

The minister further urged other companies and financial institutions to emulate FCB plc’s example.

“I would also like to encourage other companies to emulate what FCB plc has done, to give us the money and help the people who are suffering. The gap we have is significant, but the support we are receiving so far is quite overwhelming,” said Mwanamveka.

…Police confirm arrests after violent clashes, arson, and property destruction at Chiwempala Market and Chikola Secondary School grounds

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-The Zambia Police Service has confirmed the arrest of five suspects in connection with a riot and arson incident that rocked Chingola District on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

According to Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba, the incident occurred at around 14:50 hours during President Hakainde Hichilema’s visit to Chingola in the Copperbelt Province.

An irate mob reportedly turned violent during the President’s address, breaking into shops, looting, and attacking police officers who attempted to restore order.

In the chaos that ensued, a police vehicle, a white Toyota Land Cruiser registration number ZP 2537 B, was overturned and set on fire by the mob.

The violence also led to the burning of the presidential holding tent belonging to Events Matters Company of Lusaka, along with a floor carpet, two carpet runners, a presidential portrait, and a coffee table owned by the Lusaka Provincial Maintenance Unit.

A portable toilet owned by Chrisai Company of Lusaka was also destroyed, while an Isuzu vehicle, registration number CAE 5930, had its windscreen smashed by the rioters.

The police said the total value of the damaged property has not yet been established as investigations into the full extent of the destruction continue.

Two suspects, identified as Abraham Chilumbu, aged 24, of Chiwempala Township, and Abraham Sichone, aged 21, of Mjomba Compound, were the first to be arrested and charged with arson.

Three additional suspects — James Banda, aged 30, of R-Section; Arnold Mbewe, aged 22, of Maiteneke Compound; and Jackson Mbulo, aged 25, of Lufwanyama Road — were later apprehended, bringing the total number of those arrested to five.

All five suspects are currently in police custody awaiting their court appearance.

Inspector General Musamba assured the public that calm has since been restored in Chingola following the deployment of police reinforcements to maintain law and order.

He warned that acts of violence, looting, and destruction of property would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The Inspector General emphasized that the police will ensure that all perpetrators are identified, pursued, and brought to justice without exception.

Mr. Musamba further urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement officers as investigations continue.

He reminded citizens that while the peaceful expression of opinions is a constitutional right, violence and lawlessness have no place in a democratic society.

The Chingola incident has sparked public concern over the rising trend of violent protests in Zambia, prompting calls for stronger community engagement and improved crowd control measures during high-profile events.

Authorities have since vowed to tighten security and ensure that future presidential engagements across the country are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The High Court on Monday directed the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to release the results of the parliamentary election in Lilongwe Mtandire-Ntsiriza Constituency.

In court,Judge Simeon Mdeza ruled that MEC must use evidence from the ballot papers it received from the constituency, where the race was tightly contested between Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate and Minister of State, Alfred Gangata, and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate George Zulu, who previously served as the area’s Member of Parliament(MP ).

The court’s decision follows a petition by Gangata and the DPP, who asked the court to stop MEC from conducting a fresh election in the area and instead declare him the rightful winner.

Gangata filed the petition after Zulu of the MCP had earlier written to MEC, asking the electoral body to withhold the results, claiming there were irregularities during the voting process.

Speaking after the ruling,Gangata and his lawyer, Zwelithini Chipembere, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision.

However,Zulu’s lawyer, Pempho Likongwe, said they disagreed with the ruling and would be meeting with Zulu to determine their next course of action.
