Cyprus Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, met with the President and Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), Emmanuelle Soubeyran, on the sidelines of the WOAH Middle East Regional Commission Conference hosted in Cyprus by the Veterinary Services. The meeting focused on global animal-health challenges and Cyprus’ enhanced role in the Organisation’s governance.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry, discussions highlighted the need for early reporting of animal diseases, harmonised scientific standards and constant vigilance against emerging health threats. Both sides underlined that animal health is directly linked to food security and public health, particularly in the context of climate change and ahead of Cyprus’ upcoming EU Council Presidency.
WOAH’s President stressed the importance of strengthening veterinary services worldwide, citing shortages in specialised personnel, laboratory capacity and technical support, the press release said. The Minister stressed that Cyprus is prepared to contribute to technological upgrades, training and capacity-building initiatives, leveraging its accumulated expertise and island characteristics.
Special reference was made to Cyprus’ institutional role within WOAH, as Christodoulos Phippis, Director of Veterinary Services, serves as Vice-President of the Organisation’s Governance Review Committee-allowing Cyprus to actively shape reforms and future strategic directions.
The meeting also covered wildlife, fisheries and the One Health approach, with agreement on the need for closer cooperation between WOAH, WHO and FAO. WOAH’s President invited the Minister to the Organisation’s next session that will take place in Paris in spring 2026, where the new strategic priorities for the coming years will be announced.
