CBC invites public to take part in ECB survey on future euro banknotes

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) on Friday invited the public to participate in the European Central Bank’s online survey on the design of the next series of euro banknotes.

In a press release, the CBC said the ECB has shortlisted ten design proposals following an EU-wide competition that attracted more than 1,200 graphic designers. The proposals are based on two themes: ‘European culture’ and ‘Rivers and birds.’

The online survey is open to citizens across Europe until September 21, 2026. At the same time, an independent research company will conduct a parallel survey among a representative sample of residents across the euro area.

According to the CBC, the ECB’s Governing Council is expected to decide on the final design later this year, taking into account the results of both surveys, the assessment of the competition jury and a technical evaluation.

The redesign marks the first complete overhaul of euro banknotes since they were introduced in 2002. The new series will feature enhanced security and accessibility elements, while efforts will also be made to reduce the banknotes’ environmental footprint.

The CBC noted that existing euro banknotes will retain their value and will continue circulating alongside the new series once it is introduced.

The Central Bank encouraged citizens to take part in the survey and contribute to shaping the future appearance of Europe’s common currency.
