Cypriot delegation impresses at Mediterranean Games Opening Ceremony in Taranto

The Cyprus Olympic Committee’s delegation made a dynamic appearance at the Opening Ceremony of the 20th Mediterranean Games ‘Taranto 2026′, in which it is participating with 145 male and female athletes across 24 sports.

According to a COC statement, the Cypriot delegation’s entrance onto the field during the official parade of nations was met with extended applause from the fans and stood out for the size, enthusiasm and dynamic presence of the athletes.

As stated, the Cypriot flag was carried by the delegation’s two flag-bearers, the captain of the national handball team, Ioulios Argyrou, and the shooting champion, Constantina Nicolaou.

The presence of the Cypriot and Greek delegations was particularly noteworthy, it is further highlighted, as they sat side by side on the pitch following the conclusion of the athletes’ parade.

Greece, upholding its place of honour and tradition, was the first delegation to enter the stadium, with wrestling champion Maria Prevolaraki and swimming champion Apostolos Siskos serving as flag-bearers, whilst in the VIP stand, the President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, Georgios Chrysostomou, watched the Opening Ceremony seated next to the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Isidoros Kouvelos.

It is added that present at the Opening Ceremony were the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, who officially declared the 20th Mediterranean Games open, and the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, together with Italy’s political and sporting leaders and representatives of the international sporting community.

According to the statement, the central theme of the Opening Ceremony’s artistic programme was the transition from the ancient world to the future, with the history of Taranto forming the main thread of the artistic narrative, emphasizing on Taranto’s Greek origins through references to ancient Greece, sporting tradition and mythology, whereas the artistic programme also highlighted the contemporary cultural identity of the Puglia region, featuring prominent local artists.

With the conclusion of the Opening Ceremony, the 20th Mediterranean Games ‘Taranto 2026’ officially commenced, in which 26 National Olympic Committees and more than 3,800 male and female athletes are taking part, COC concludes.
