Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested 25 suspects accused of violently snatching mobile phones from motorists and passengers along the Northern Bypass, officials said Friday.
The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation, targeting gangs preying on vehicles caught in heavy traffic, particularly around Kampala’s Double Q section.
‘The suspects were reportedly caught red-handed targeting motorists stuck in traffic around the Double Q section of the bypass,’ said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police.
Police also impounded eight motorcycles allegedly used by the gang to carry out the snatch-and-ride attacks, which have reportedly surged along the busy route in recent weeks.
Several victims and eyewitnesses have recorded statements, and investigators secured video footage showing the suspects in action, Owoyesigyire said, adding that the material will be relied upon during prosecution.
All 25 suspects are currently detained at Nateete Police Division.
‘We appreciate the public for the continued vigilance and cooperation,’ Owoyesigyire said, urging motorists to remain alert as police intensify operations against criminal rings exploiting traffic congestion.
He added that security deployments will be heightened during peak traffic hours, particularly as the festive season approaches, to curb similar incidents and ensure road users’ safety.
The operation marks the latest effort by Kampala police to tackle opportunistic crime that often escalates during periods of heavy traffic, when motorists and passengers are particularly vulnerable to snatch thefts.
