Mumbere demands release of property seized in 2016 palace raid

Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere, the Rwenzururu King, is demanding the release of the Kingdom’s vehicles and other property that were confiscated during the security raid on his palace in 2016.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the king expressed displeasure over the ongoing situation, revealing that the kingdom is currently operating from rented facilities.

“Two buildings belonging to the kingdom continue being designated as crime scenes while three cars are currently parked at the Kasese police yard,” the statement read.

He also accused the government of mismanaging assets that rightfully belong to the Kingdom, including land where the former palace was situated.

Mumbere clarified that the land is his personal property and that he had previously allowed the kingdom to operate there, but it is now being treated as a crime scene.

He directed the Kingdom’s Attorney General, Wilfred Makasi, to furnish him with an immediate report on the matter.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kule Baritazara stated that the kingdom is finalising plans to resolve the issue swiftly. He acknowledged that the kingdom’s offices are now housed in rented premises.

“We are also moving out to mobilise for resources to enable the kingdom to establish new office spaces,” Baritazara said. He blamed the government for the current predicament.

Makasi informed the media that he has been in contact with the Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions but is currently occupied with the case involving opposition figure Dr Kiiza Besigye. However, he assured that he is following up on the matter, as directed by the king.

The Director of Public Prosecutions dropped all charges, including terrorism, murder, treason and malicious damage to property, against Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere and his subjects.
