A 23-year-old scrap collector is in custody after a police sniffer dog successfully tracked him from a crime scene, leading officers to find him dancing inside his home alongside millions in stolen cash.
The incident began on Friday, May 29, 2026, at approximately 12pm, when a resident of Abocet Village, Sikuda Sub-county in Busia District, returned home to find his house burglarized. Thieves had unlawfully gained entry by digging through the back of the structure and breaking down the door. The complainant reported the theft of a mobile phone, a camera, a laptop, and a significant amount of cash, totaling millions of shillings in losses.
Upon receiving the report, Busia District Police deployed a specialized canine unit to the scene. The sniffer dog picked up a human scent at the home and trailed it for roughly 800 meters to a nearby junction. The canine then tracked a left turn for another 200 meters, leading officers directly to the residence of Mulyakyami Banuli, a local scrap collector.
When police arrived at the home, they discovered Banuli inside, dancing alone to loud music playing from a newly acquired woofer system.
Suspecting the sound system was part of the stolen property, officers immediately arrested Banuli. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered a bundle of cash amounting to Shs4.6 million concealed beneath his bed. Together with additional currency found in his pockets, police recovered a total of Shs4,889,100.
The Busia District Police confirmed that the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue. Officials praised the swift work of the canine unit, which transformed a cold trail into a definitive arrest in under an hour.
